mPNS for Fibromyalgia
mPNS for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome marked by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and cognitive symptoms. mPNS (magnetic peripheral nerve stimulation) is a noninvasive neuromodulation option that may help reduce pain and improve function as part of a multimodal fibromyalgia plan.
What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a centralized pain disorder characterized by widespread pain for 3 months or more, plus other symptoms (fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, cognitive complaints) without an alternative explanatory disorder. Pathophysiology involves central sensitization, altered pain processing, and neurochemical changes rather than only peripheral tissue damage.
Common symptoms
- Widespread, persistent aching, burning, or deep musculoskeletal pain
- Fatigue and low exercise tolerance
- Sleep disturbance (nonrestorative sleep) and morning stiffness
- Cognitive dysfunction (“fibro fog”): difficulty concentrating, memory lapses
- Heightened sensitivity to touch, temperature, light, or sound; mood symptoms (anxiety, depression) often cooccur
How fibromyalgia affects daily life
Daily Function Limitations
Reduced mobility, disrupted sleep, and ongoing fatigue can make everyday tasks more difficult.
Sleep Disruption & Fatigue
Ongoing sleep loss and exhaustion that worsen pain and limit recovery
Cognitive Impairment
Difficulty with focus, memory, productivity, and driving safety
Emotional & Psychological Impact
Anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, and reduced quality of life
Common treatment options
Multimodal, individualized approach is standard. Treatment focuses on symptom improvement, function restoration, and relapse prevention rather than cure
Activity Management
Education, pacing, and graded exercise programs (aerobic + strength)
Medications for symptom control
Antidepressants (duloxetine, milnacipran),
Mind–Body Support
Cognitive behavioral therapy, pain coping strategies, and sleep hygiene
Nonpharmacologic therapies
physical therapy, aerobic conditioning, acupuncture, mindfulness, and multidisciplinary pain programs
What is mPNS
mPNS is a noninvasive therapy that delivers focused magnetic pulses over peripheral nerves to modulate abnormal pain signaling and reduce peripheral input that contributes to central sensitization.
Who may consider mPNS
Patients with fibromyalgia who have persistent pain limiting function despite standard measures, or who want to reduce medication load and add a noninvasive neuromodulation option. Clinical screening for contraindications (e.g., some implanted electronic devices) is required.
How mPNS can help Fibromyalgia
Reduces peripheral nociceptive drive and abnormal nerve excitability that can sustain central pain amplification
May lower pain intensity and improve tolerance for exercise and rehabilitation, supporting longterm symptom control
Offers a low systemic sideeffect profile compared with chronic medications and is needlefree and outpatient friendly
Best used as part of a multimodal program (exercise, sleep therapy, psychology, medication optimization)
Typical treatment course and what to expect
- Clinical evaluation to confirm fibromyalgia diagnosis and rule out other causes; mPNS is an adjunct, not a standalone cure
- Treatment commonly delivered across multiple sessions; many patients report gradual pain reduction and functional gains over days–weeks to months. Individual responses vary.
- Side effects are uncommon and typically mild (transient local tingling or soreness).
